What is Arbaeen?
Initially small and at times completely illegal and forced underground, the Arbaeen Walk is a 14 decade strong practice of mourning Husayn ibn Ali by visiting his burial site by foot. Today, over 27 million people participate in the movement, walking the 50 miles from Najaf to Karbala. Through this act of mourning, they reaffirm their commitment to the principles for which Husayn ibn Ali (a) lived (and for which he was ultimately martyred).
